Description

A classic Shepherd’s Pie featuring a savory ground beef and vegetable filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Boil the potatoes until tender. Drain and mash with milk and butter. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef. Drain excess fat.
  4. Add the chopped onion and diced carrots to the skillet. Cook until softened.
  5. Stir in the frozen peas, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme.
  6. Season the mixture with salt and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Pour the beef mixture into a baking dish.
  8. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the beef mixture.
  9. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese if using.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of ground beef and ground lamb.
  • If you don’t have beef broth, you can use water and a beef bouillon cube.
  • You can add other vegetables like corn or green beans to the filling.
