Description

A simple and creamy homemade macaroni and cheese recipe made on the stovetop. This classic comfort food is perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring frequently, until thickened.
  4. Remove from heat. Stir in salt, pepper, and paprika.
  5. Add cheese and stir until melted and smooth.
  6. Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat.
  7. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the sauce.
  • Feel free to use a mix of cheeses for a different flavor profile.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick, whisk in a little more milk.
