Description

A comforting and cheesy bake made with ham and potatoes, perfect for a family meal.


Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 pound cooked ham, diced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk and cream until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat. Stir in cheddar cheese, Gruyere cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
  6. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Spread half of the diced ham over the potatoes.
  8. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the ham and potatoes.
  9. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, ham, and sauce.
  10. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  11. Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  12. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For crispier potatoes, you can parboil them before layering.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like onions or peas.
  • Different types of cheese can be used for variety.
