A comforting and cheesy bake made with ham and potatoes, perfect for a family meal.

- 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 pound cooked ham, diced
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in milk and cream until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Remove from heat. Stir in cheddar cheese, Gruyere cheese, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
- Spread half of the diced ham over the potatoes.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the ham and potatoes.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, ham, and sauce.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For crispier potatoes, you can parboil them before layering.
- Feel free to add other vegetables like onions or peas.
- Different types of cheese can be used for variety.
