  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the molasses, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until firm enough to roll.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Place the confectioners’ sugar in a shallow bowl.
  8. Roll the chilled dough into 1-inch balls.
  9. Roll each ball generously in the confectioners’ sugar, ensuring it is well coated.
  10. Place the coated balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  11. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are still slightly soft. The cookies will crackle as they bake.
  12. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
