Description

A classic comfort food side dish, cheesy scalloped potatoes are creamy, rich, and satisfying. Thinly sliced potatoes are baked in a luscious cream sauce with savory onions and topped with melted cheddar cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 kg potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Scatter half of the sliced onions over the potatoes.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
  6. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes and onions.
  7. Repeat the layers of potatoes, onions, and cream mixture.
  8. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  9. Bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  11. Bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
  12. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, use starchy potatoes like Russets.
  • You can add a pinch of nutmeg to the cream mixture for extra flavor.
  • Feel free to use a mix of cheeses, such as Gruyere or Monterey Jack, along with cheddar.
