Description

A hearty and flavorful split pea soup made with a ham bone. This recipe is perfect for a comforting meal.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried green split peas, rinsed
  • 1 ham bone (about 1-2 pounds)
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste


Instructions

  1. Combine split peas, ham bone, water, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, thyme, and pepper in a large pot or Dutch oven.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until peas are tender and ham bone meat is falling off.
  3. Remove ham bone and shred any meat from it. Discard bone.
  4. Return shredded meat to the pot.
  5. Stir well and season with salt to taste.
  6. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a thicker soup, mash some of the peas against the side of the pot.
  • You can add other vegetables like potatoes or parsnips.
  • This soup freezes well.
